Experimental Evaluation of Conjugate Flaws on Rock Dynamic Fracturing

The fracture behaviors of rocks under dynamic loading are significantly affected by flaws. Understanding regarding this fundamental mechanism flaw-induced fracturing could aid in reducing geohazards deep rock engineering. In study, a series experiments conducted on conjugate flawed white sandstone specimens to study the effect geometric configuration flaws fracturing. results show that geometry and conditions both strongly affect cracking failure behaviors. Two types shear cracks three tensile observed, four coalescence patterns identified, global modes usually coupled with two or more patterns. inhibiting enhancing regards potential obtained. These mechanisms depend angular relationship between strain field. “guiding effect” deviation deformation cracks. Moreover, it is found condition dominates tendency macroscopically, while setting affects behavior mode locally.
